The Good Things #8

Hello and welcome to The Good Things! Summer is well and truly upon us, and as the kids have broken up for school, I have a wealth of small, everyday things to be happy about. We’ve been busy getting up to all sorts of activities, some of which I’ll share with you here and some of which I’m sharing over on Instagram. That’s not to say it’s all plain sailing, they do argue but I’m trying to focus on the good stuff. After all, as Van Morrison says ‘These are the days. The time is now…’

Anyway, on to The Good Things…

Happiness means different things to everyone. Whether that’s climbing a mountain, baking a cake, spending time with family, travelling somewhere exciting, a gardening or environmental success, visiting a new restaurant, a great outfit post, or your experiences of learning something new, The Good Things is a linky for everyone. For me, happiness is found in the everyday things. It’s about taking notice of the small things and practising gratitude for the life that I have. So, I will join in by writing about something that’s made me happy each week; My Good Thing…

My Good Thing #8: A healthy lunch for one. As I wrote about recently, I’ve been struggling a bit with cooking for just me, when the kids are away with their dad. But I’m turning over a new leaf and after just a few days of cooking more, eating healthier and looking after myself, I’m already feeling better. When you travel by plane, they always tell you that in the case of an emergency, you should fit your own oxygen mask before helping other people with theirs. And that’s the case with being healthier too. How can I make a point of ensuring that my kids eat well when I do not? How can I ask them to sit at the table when I eat a bowl of cereal standing next to the sink? A case in point; this lunch. Photographed as part of the Instagram #augustbreak2014 challenge, it represents the kind of food I want to be eating, and getting them to eat. Strawberries, torn buffalo mozzarella, pea shoots and really good balsamic vinegar. Eaten at the table — I even used one of my beloved linen napkins from Merci. All of it designed to prove to me that taking care of myself matters. Because when I’m fit and healthy, I can be better at keeping my kids fit and healthy. And that’s definitely my Good Thing for this week.
