Essence + Alchemy candles.

Beautifully fragranced tea lights from Essence & Alchemy

When we’re not all soaking wet under damp grey skies, Autumn and Winter bring so many joys. I love kicking my way through piles of rust coloured leaves, an allotment pumpkin harvest, Hallowe’en and Guy Fawkes Night. Then as Winter turns, I find joy in the nearly-hibernating-feel of of getting cosy on the sofa, armed with blankets, woolly socks and a good book. Maybe even a walk through some crisp white snow, if I’m lucky, instead of all that driving rain. And, always, candles…

I know that candles are an all-year-round joy, but I find them especially enticing as the evenings draw in. From September until the following Spring, I like to burn candles in the evening. I think that wanting to bring light into the darkness is a really instinctive trait, whether it’s candles, a real fire in your sitting room, the sparkle of fireworks or the roar of a bonfire.

The beauty of flickering candle light is also enhanced by a carefully created fragrance to envelop me in even more warmth–the Danish concept of hygge is what I’m aiming for– so it’s always been really important to me to find candles that smell as good as they look. This Autumn, having been eyeing them up for months, I finally bought a collection of candles from Essence + Alchemy. Handmade in small batches by a fantastic independent maker, Lesley, these beautiful candles are made with essential oils, giving them a balanced but not over-powering smell. To add to their natural product beauty, the packaging is minimal, the ethics are strong and environmental impact is light. All together, that adds up to a brand I admire hugely.

Because I’m horribly indecisive, after a long time deliberating on the website, I bought the mixed scent collection of tea lights, which arrived with this beautiful straw and dried flower packing. This means that I’ve been able to try out all the different fragrances before choosing which ones to buy in full sized candles. I like to think of it as a wardrobe of scent, to try on as the right mood suits me. The candles come (without those metal cases you might see in mass-produced tea lights) in little glassine bags and I bought a pack with a single glass tea light holder. As the candles burn so cleanly, I’ve been able to just pull out the little metal bit that the wick attaches to, and easily replace with a new candle each time. So much less waste.

Essence & Alchemy - independent candle company

Gorgeous candles from Essence & Alchemy - great gifts for Christmas!

And as you know, I rarely review things on this blog, so you know that when I tell you that I love these little candles, you can be assured that I do…

I’ve burned most of them now – because I like to thoroughly review stuff before posting about it! With a range of scents–from Hibernate, a warming fragrance with a kick of lemongrass to stop it getting too soporific, through to Purify which I burn through the day as I’m convinced the lemon, peppermint and rosemary helps me to concentrate when I’m working at home–there’s something to suit every mood, every time of day, and every time of year! Tonight, I shall burn Roses when I’m the bath as I love the rich floral scent…

Having worked my way through this beautiful collection, the only one I’ve not tried so far is a special Camp Fire candle – which would actually be the perfect candle to take to the blogger’s gathering I’m going to next weekend. I love these candles and will definitely be ordering more for myself and as gifts. Needless to say, these would be a great Christmas present if you’re looking for something for me… or even perhaps someone else!

Now – do go to the Essence + Alchemy website and put your order in before the Christmas deadline…

Or, if you live near me, go to The Hepworth Museum in Wakefield this weekend to buy Essence + Alchemy candles from their Christmas Market!
