Little Luxuries.

I’m saving up for holidays, paying off debts and trying to keep myself cheerful just by thinking of the sunshine and beaches to come. These long grey January days, with no sunshine in sight, can leave me pretty gloomy. I’ve been trying to come up with ways to cheer myself up, without spending a lot of money. All too often it feels as though you have to spend money to indulge yourself, but really time and effort are more important.

Some of my favourite little luxuries:

  • A walk in the woods, especially now the snowdrops are in bloom. Even when it’s cold, they lift the spirits.
  • A crisp new edition of a favourite magazine.
  • Spending some time on the sofa with a newly chosen novel from my local library.
  • A small posy of flowers. I’ve tidied up my bedside cabinet and bought a small bunch of pink tulips. Just looking at them every morning cheers me up.
  • A few, good quality chocolates – these ones are chocolate BAFTAs! I went into Hotel Chocolat for my usual treat of Florentines and got distracted by these. At the moment, I cannot bear to eat them. That feeling won’t last…
  • A bubble bath without interruptions. A bit of peace is a huge luxury when you have small children.
  • A proper face to face chat with a friend. Preferably with the addition of cake or wine.
  • Making time to watch good quality television programmes. My current favourites: Borgen, Stella and New Girl.
  • Giving myself a manicure or pedicure with a bright, cheerful polish.
  • A home spa using all the little samples I’ve been collecting – I’ll have even more of these now I’ve signed up to Glossy Box and I will enjoy taking time to use and review everything they send me.

What are your little luxuries? I’d love to compile a list of things to choose from when I’m feeling gloomy and in need of cheering up without spending a fortune…

  1. Totally know the feeling! Thank you for the Glossy Box idea 🙂 I’m a stationery fiend, so I always find that a new notebook (in which to plan future adventures or recipes) cheers me up.

  2. These all sound lovely. I’ve been cheering myself up by trying out lots of new recipes, and inventing new indoor games for the children. I spent a v happy morning with twins and a friend making pirate hats, telescopes, having a treasure hunt and indoor picnic! Realised doesn’t have to be warm and sunny to have fun. My mission today is definitely to have a nice soak in the bath and buy some flowers. They always cheer me up. I might even paint my nails too!

Your indoor fun sounds great – I do sometimes struggle when I have my kids inside all day, I might steal some of your ideas. I hope you got the chance for a long soak in the bath and some flowers x

It can’t be classed as a luxury exactly but the one thing that always cheers me up is… jelly! I am not a winter person and couldn’t get any pleasure out of the snow so I needed mega cheering today – and so I put on my wellies and trogged into town and bought several packets of jelly. Sad, but I’m silently thrilled that in about half an hour I will be eating raspberry jelly with tinned peaches. So, yes kiddy food is my idea of luxury! And the manicure I had while getting my hair done on Friday (fabulous deep orange) is very cheering every time I see my own lovely nails!

  4. these all sound great – love the Belle and Boo card next to the flowers too. I love buying a bunch of daffodils which I love and it means I can afford to have flowers in the house!

Oh thank you – Belle and Boo is a lovely company, isn’t it? Daffodils are next on my list, so cheerful and cheap enough to afford them on a regular basis!

£2.20 every Sunday, a walk to the papershop then a cup of tea and the Sunday Times, saving the Style section for the bath in the evening #priceless

  6. I like your list so much that I’m probably going to nick the idea and write my own.
